JEE Advanced is the second-stage national engineering entrance examination conducted by one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a rotational basis. Unlike JEE Main, it is not an open exam - only the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers (across categories) are eligible to appear. It is the sole gateway for admission into all 23 IITs and a few specialised institutes like IISc Bangalore (for the Bachelor of Science programme). Roughly 2.5-3 lakh candidates appear each year, with only ~17,000 IIT seats on offer. The exam is regarded as one of the most conceptually demanding undergraduate entrance tests in India; difficulty lies in depth, problem-solving ability and adaptability to unfamiliar question formats rather than in syllabus breadth.

Is JEE Advanced harder than JEE Main?
Yes, substantially. The syllabus largely overlaps but Advanced focuses on depth, multi-concept linking and unfamiliar question formats with variable marking schemes.
Which institutes accept JEE Advanced scores?
All 23 IITs through JoSAA counselling, plus a few specialised institutes like IISc Bangalore for the BS programme and certain dual-degree programmes at IIST/RGIPT.
Does Class 12 score matter for IIT admission?
You need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or be in the top 20 percentile of your board to be eligible for IIT admission through JoSAA, even if you crack JEE Advanced.
What if I don't get a good IIT branch?
JoSAA allows preference filling across all NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs based on your JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks combined. Many students take a 'best branch over best institute' call here.
