Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), founded in 1909 by Jamsetji Tata, is India's oldest and most prestigious institute for scientific research. Globally ranked among the top 200 universities and NIRF #1 Overall University consistently, IISc is the gold standard for research-oriented education in India. It primarily admits students for PG/PhD programs, but offers a unique Bachelor of Science (Research) program through KVPY/JEE Advanced/NEET that produces some of India's most research-bound undergraduates.

IISc is fundamentally a research institute - its undergraduate BS(Research) program is small (~120 seats) and uniquely designed for students who want to become scientists, not professionals.

BS (Research) - 4-year undergraduate research program - admission through JEE Advanced, JEE Main, KVPY (legacy), NEET-UG, or IISER Aptitude Test. Streams include Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics, Physics. Most IISc students join through PG (MTech, MSc, PhD) via GATE, JAM, JEST.

IISc UG is research-oriented - most graduates pursue PhD at top US/European universities (Stanford, MIT, ETH, Cambridge, Harvard). Industry placements happen for those interested, primarily in deep tech (semiconductors, AI research labs, biotech). Not designed as a placement institution.
