NEET Score to Medical College: 2026 Admission Guide
This guide shows which medical colleges you can realistically get into based on your NEET score and rank. Based on 5 years of actual cutoff data from MCC counselling, state quota counselling, and deemed university rounds.
Understanding NEET Cutoffs
NEET medical college admissions have two paths: All India Quota (15% seats) and State Quota (85% seats). State quota is MUCH easier if you're applying to your home state.

- AIIMS Bhopal, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur
- JIPMER Puducherry
- Top government medical colleges (All India Quota)
- KGMU Lucknow (Rank 200-800)

Score 650-680 (Rank 500-5,000)
Realistic Options:
- Top government medical colleges (State Quota)
- AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Rishikesh (Rank 1,000-3,000)
- State medical colleges (All India Quota) - Tier 2 states
- CMC Vellore (Christian quota)

Score 620-650 (Rank 5,000-20,000)
Realistic Options:
- Government medical colleges (State Quota) - Most states
- Deemed universities: KMC Manipal, Kasturba Mangalore
- Central universities: BHU, Aligarh Muslim University
- State medical colleges (All India Quota) - Smaller states
Strategy: Home state government medical college is safe. Consider deemed universities if fees aren't an issue.
Score 600-620 (Rank 20,000-35,000)
Realistic Options:
- Government medical colleges (State Quota) - Varies by state
- Deemed universities: St. John's Bangalore, Amrita Kochi
- Private medical colleges (Management quota) - ₹50 lakh+ total
- Central universities (if applicable)
Strategy: Government college in your state is borderline. Have private/deemed backups ready.
Score 580-600 (Rank 35,000-55,000)
Realistic Options:
- Government medical colleges (State Quota) - Only in less competitive states
- Deemed universities: JSS Mysore, SRM Medical College
- Private medical colleges (₹1 crore+ total fees)
Strategy: Government college depends heavily on your state. Budget ₹50 lakh-₹1 crore for private.
Score 550-580 (Rank 55,000-90,000)
Realistic Options:
- Deemed universities (lower-ranked ones)
- Private medical colleges (₹1-1.5 crore total)
- BDS (Dental) at government colleges
Strategy: MBBS at private college vs BDS at government college. Fees vs branch decision.
Score 500-550 (Rank 90,000-200,000)
Realistic Options:
- Private medical colleges (₹1.5 crore+)
- BAMS/BHMS/BDS (Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Dental) at government colleges
- Management quota at deemed universities
Strategy: MBBS at ₹1.5 crore vs government BDS vs drop year to improve score.
State Quota: The Game Changer
Your domicile matters MASSIVELY. State quota cutoffs are 10,000-50,000 ranks more relaxed than All India quota.
Example: Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad (Telangana)
- All India Quota (General): Closing rank ~500
- State Quota (Telangana, General): Closing rank ~5,000
That's a 10x difference!
State-Wise Competitiveness (General Category, State Quota):
| State | Approximate Closing Rank | Competitiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka | 3,000-8,000 | Very High |
| Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu | 5,000-12,000 | High |
| Rajasthan, MP, UP | 8,000-20,000 | Moderate |
| Bihar, Odisha, J&K, Northeast | 15,000-40,000 | Lower |
Category-Wise Cutoff Differences
- OBC: Add ~10,000-20,000 to your rank for comparison
- SC: Add ~50,000-100,000 to your rank
- ST: Add ~100,000-150,000 to your rank
- EWS: Add ~5,000-10,000 to your rank
Example: If you're SC with rank 80,000, you can compare yourself to General rank ~30,000 for options.
Government vs Private vs Deemed: The Cost Reality
| College Type | Total Cost (5.5 years) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Government | ₹3-8 lakh | AIIMS, state medical colleges |
| Deemed (Top Tier) | ₹50 lakh-₹1 crore | CMC Vellore, KMC Manipal |
| Deemed (Mid Tier) | ₹80 lakh-₹1.2 crore | JSS Mysore, Amrita Kochi |
| Private | ₹1-2 crore | Most private medical colleges |
Common Mistakes NEET Students Make
- Ignoring state quota advantage: Don't waste AIQ choices on colleges your state quota will get you.
- Overestimating private college quality: ₹1.5 crore college ≠ better doctor. Teaching depends on hospital patient load.
- Not considering BDS/BAMS: Government BDS is better than private MBBS financially.
- Following peers blindly: Your friend's home state cutoff may be completely different from yours.
Should You Take a Drop Year?
Consider a drop year if:
- You scored 500-580 and want government MBBS
- You can improve by 50+ marks with focused preparation
- Your family can't afford ₹1 crore+ for private medical college
Don't take a drop year if:
- You already took one drop and scored similar
- You have a government college offer (even BDS/BAMS)
- Mental health is suffering from exam pressure

Data Sources & Methodology
Primary Data Sources:
- MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) — Official All India Quota closing ranks for government medical colleges (2021-2025, Rounds 1-3)
- State Medical Counselling Authorities — State quota closing ranks from individual state counselling boards (Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, UP, etc.)
- NTA (National Testing Agency) — Official NEET score vs rank data and category-wise cutoffs
- Individual Medical College Websites — Deemed university cutoffs and fees published post-admission
- DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) — Approved medical college list and seat matrix data
Methodology:
We analyzed 5 years of NEET closing rank data (2021-2025) from MCC All India Quota rounds and state quota counselling across 15+ states. Rank brackets reflect median closing ranks from 2023-2025 to account for yearly fluctuations.
Score-to-rank mapping is approximate and based on NTA percentile-to-rank conversion data from the last 3 years. Exact scores can vary by ±5-10 marks depending on exam difficulty.
State quota competitiveness is categorized by analyzing closing ranks for government medical colleges in each state over 3 years. States with consistent 3,000-8,000 closing ranks are "Very High," while states with 15,000-40,000 are "Lower" competitiveness.
Limitations: State quota cutoffs can shift dramatically based on state-specific factors (domicile rule changes, new medical colleges, NRI quota changes). Deemed university fees can change 10-20% annually. Always verify current fees before admission.
⚠️ Data Integrity Statement
