A realistic cost-benefit analysis for engineering, medicine, law, commerce, and design. When is ₹15-20 lakhs for private college actually worth it?
"My child got NIT Surathkal but also got BITS Pilani. Is BITS worth ₹18 lakhs when NIT costs ₹8 lakhs?"
"We can get a government medical college in a smaller state, or a private medical college in our home state. The private college costs ₹80 lakhs. What should we do?"
These are the questions parents lose sleep over. The answer isn't simple, but it follows a framework.

Avoid:
Government is almost always better:
Reality check: MBBS degree has same value (government or private). Government training is usually better (more patients, less commercial pressure).
₹10 lakh education loan at 10% interest over 10 years = ₹13,215 EMI per month
Your first job salary needs to be at least ₹5 LPA (₹42k/month) to manage this comfortably.
Scenario: Got CS at both. NIT Trichy ₹8L total, BITS Pilani ₹18L total.
Decision: NIT Trichy if no financial pressure. BITS if you strongly value flexibility (can switch branches easily) and modern infrastructure.
Outcome: Both have excellent placements (>₹10 LPA median). NIT has slight edge in PSU recruitment. BITS has better startup culture.
Scenario: Got MBBS seat in Assam government college (₹6L total) or Karnataka private college (₹60L total).
Decision: Government college, unless family has ₹60L without loan AND location is critical (elderly parents, family business).
Reality: MBBS degree has same value. Government training is usually better (higher patient volume). ₹54L saved can fund MD/MS later.
Scenario: Got BA Economics at DU (₹50k total) or BBA at Symbiosis Pune (₹12L total).
Decision: DU if target is CAT/UPSC/academic career. Symbiosis if target is corporate placements immediately after graduation.
Tradeoff: DU has better brand for post-grad admissions. Symbiosis has better placement cell for undergrad jobs.
⚠️ Warning: If the college evades these questions or provides vague answers, it's a red flag. Walk away. Your ₹15-20 lakhs and your child's 4 years are too valuable to gamble on unverified claims.
If you get a government college in your field, take it. Lower fees, proven outcomes, less risk.
