IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is a national-level entrance examination for admission into the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) - autonomous public institutions established by the Ministry of Education to strengthen India's foundation in scientific research and higher education. Unlike conventional engineering colleges, IISERs are research-driven institutions; undergraduate education is closely integrated with laboratory work, research exposure and academic exploration. IAT focuses on conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning and interdisciplinary thinking rather than speed-based or formula-heavy problem solving. The exam is highly competitive, with limited intake across all seven IISER campuses, and is intended for students serious about long-term academic and research careers.

All seven IISERs - Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati. Some IISERs also use IAT for their integrated PhD shortlisting.
Is there a separate exam for each IISER?
No. IAT is a single common test for all seven IISERs. Counselling is centralised after results.
What programmes does IISER offer?
Primarily the 5-year BS-MS dual degree across Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and interdisciplinary majors. Some IISERs also offer 4-year BS, B.Tech in selected branches and integrated PhD.
Is IISER better than IIT for research-oriented students?
IISERs are dedicated research universities with deep faculty involvement and lab exposure from Year 1, which suits students aiming for PhD/academic careers more than conventional IIT B.Tech routes.
Can I take IAT and JEE Main both?
Yes. Many students appear for IAT, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. They are independent exams with no overlap in eligibility or counselling.
